As last Friday I saw three movies. I would have posted this entry sooner, but I haven't been in the mood to do so. Those three movies I saw on Friday were Hit & Run, Premium Rush, and Celeste & Jesse Forever. I think its safe to say that this was my most flawed movie day, being that there were flaws in all three movies, more so than other movies I see in one day.
The movie Hit & Run is co-directed and written by Dax Shepard. Also co-starring in the film is his real life fiancee Kristen Bell, Tom Arnold, Michael Rosenbaum, and Michael Cooper (of Hangover fame), who happens to give John Travolta a run for his money in horrible hairdo's in film. The film was fairly decent, until you (the audience of the film) start to think, and then you'll roll your eyes, and the rest of the movie tends to lose its appeal. The moment in the film where this happens is when Kristen Bell's character finds out her boyfriend's real name and past (a year after dating, might I add), and any sense of reality is lost afterwards. I won't say more about Dax Shepard's past in the film (he plays her boyfriend in the film), as I don't want to spoil the film, just in case anyone actually wants to go see it.
Premium Rush is about bike messengers in New York City. The film stars Joesph Gordon-Levitt as a bike messenger, and he has to deliver a package to China Town by 7pm. The film starts off at 6:33 pm, and retraces the events leading up to the time, and honestly, the film jumped around a bit too much. It's one of those films where just as the action is picking up, they go back and you get to relive it. In some instances it works, but in others it doesn't, and it gets frustrating.
Why is the film flawed? It's flawed because Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character is one that turns down law school to ride around delivering packages in New York City (without a brake on top of it), where it's revealed early on that a good day, he makes $80 a day, and less than that on a bad day, in one of the biggest cities. It's kind of a little absurd to think that's true.
Having said that, the real star of the film is Michael Shannon. He's the villain in the film, trying to intercept Levitt from delivering his package, because the package he's carrying will eliminate his gambling debt. It isn't revealed until nearly the end as to why the package is so important, but I thought the film had a nice ending with all things considered.
The last film was my favorite of the three, even though like the other two, it was flawed. Why is it flawed? The film centers around Celeste (played by Rashida Jones) and Jesse (Andy Samberg), whom are best friends, but going through a divorce, but still do everything together, as if they were still together and there was no divorce going on between the two, for at least the first 20 to 30 minutes or so of the movie.
For myself, once I looked past that, I really liked the movie, and thought that Rashida Jones really shined in this movie. She played a character that is of the controlling type, and is probably what led to their divorce, but like I said she really shined in the movie. The movie itself is labeled as a romantic comedy, but honestly it's not a comedy, nor a romantic one at that. It's more of a serious type drama, and that's why I tended to like it more.
