Summerslam 2012

Yesterday was a day of firsts for me. Well I don't know about more than one first, but it was my first WWE pay-per-view event, and one of the company's biggest. The event was SummerSlam. I've been to several television events of Raw, SmackDown, once they filmed both on the same day (was called a Super Show), house shows, but none quite like this.

The differences among them are simple. The house shows are the events where they will interact more with the fans and allows the wrestlers to develop/work on new and existing feuds before they move it on to tv, or continue feuds that are currently on tv. Raw and SmackDown are the shows on Monday Nights and Friday Nights (although SmackDown has been live on Tuesday nights more and more recently). Raw is now a 3 hour show every week, and SmackDown is still a 2 hour show.  SummerSlam is perhaps the third biggest ppv for the company (or at least tied for third with Survivor Series), behind the Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania.

Another difference between the Raw and SmackDown events compared to SummerSlam is after the Raw and SmackDown shows (once they stop filming), they will have a bonus match, which is often used to send the fans home happy, and is often used for the top face of the company (face=good guy) to thank the fans for coming out.
Now as far as yesterday went, I went to SummerSlam at the Staples Center with my brother, cousin, and a friend. We got there at the event with plenty of time to spare, and ate across the street at the ESPN Zone. The food was pricey to say the least, and the menu was a special menu with items named after several wrestlers. I didn't order any of the items named after the wrestlers, but I did order the chicken tenders with fries (an item I've had before there), and it didn't disappoint. It was just as good yesterday as the first time I ordered it.

Just outside the ESPN Zone was the WWE's main ring for Fan Axxess (or however you spell it), and is something I might look into next year, so I can get my replica belt autographed. We did see one match while we were waiting to be seated inside the restaurant, so that was worth it.

Once done, we waited outside the doors (which were packed) for what seemed like an eternity (or 35-40 minutes) in the hot sun, depending how you wish to tell time. There were various chants from the fans, as only wrestling fans can do (in unison), and once the doors opened, the fans started Daniel Bryan's Yes Chant, although Daniel Bryan is now trying to start a No Chant.

The first match of the night was a match for the United States Championship, and the champion going into the match lost. This was before SummerSlam went on the air, although the match could have been seen live on WWE's Youtube page.

During the event itself, there were seven matches, and Kevin Rudolf was there to perform the theme song for SummerSlam, which was his song Don't Give Up. The fans actually booed him at first (because let's face it, he's not a wrester), but was saved once the Divas came out.

Best entrances in my opinion, were Chris Jericho (as usual), as the lights went out, and he stood at the top of the stage once again with his jacket that lights up, The Miz with his Awesome entrance (literally), Brock Lesnar, Triple H, and I could probably go on.

The only title last night to change hands was the United States championship, so that was a bit disappointing, but other than that, I had a great time.
